JTrek: October 2008
http://jtrek.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Sunday, October 26, 2008. Building Back Up for Land, Hope and Life. The story for my travels this week is a little different. I wish I could introduce it with a picture that was a bit more in focus, but my camera is still rebelling at the moment. What it contains deserves a bit more than I can really show. This is the inside of a house in. In the western highlands. It is a Mayan mother and daughter of the Ixil tribe we paid a visit to. The story behind how they got there is a long one. Fortunately, there...

JTrek: What Happened?
http://jtrek.blogspot.com/2014/08/what-happened.html
Saturday, August 16, 2014. In case you haven't noticed, this trip wasn't like the others as far as this blog went. Mostly you'd notice because I haven't said much about anything that was happening or what I was actually doing. I ran into a couple problems early on when it came to recording a public history of what I was up to: telling the story affects the participants. It's tougher to write about something when you see and are working with your subjects. Prison gang member with the infamous numbers gang.

JTrek: December 2008
http://jtrek.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 25, 2008. As far as I'm concerned, it's not Christmas unless I get to play with kids. This year, it was a crowd, mostly orphans, from a local school here in Cuzco, Peru. We got Santa out to the courtyard to give them gifts, and then Peruvian Christmas fruitcake and homemade hot chocolate made with cinnamon, condensed milk, and cloves. There's nothing quite in the spirit of Christmas as much as the act of giving. Sometimes what people want isn't the obvious thing. I'm not trying...For t...

JTrek: November 2006
http://jtrek.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, November 29, 2006. I've come a long way to get here and a ton has happened. I got as much of it as I could on tape, but of course all I can show that way is the small slice I can point a camera at. There's plenty that I couldn't record that deserves to be shared. Example: Have you ever been blessed by an elephant? I'd just been blessed by a giant pachyderm. Wow. I have lots of stories, lots of footage, and lots of pictures. I'll be uploading as much as possible over the next few days but i...

JTrek: A Reversal
http://jtrek.blogspot.com/2014/07/a-reversal.html
Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Looking back over the last couple weeks, thinking of what to put here, I've realized something a little weird. The things I'm doing that are the most remarkable to normal people seem to me to be background. Meanwhile the stuff I find the weirdest to adapt to and deal with is what's background to most normal people. In other words, stepping out of a 16 seat van with twenty people in it on a highway in Mozambique, and negotiating sandwiches from street vendors in Portuguese? Interest...

JTrek: Fresh Tofo Coconut
http://jtrek.blogspot.com/2014/06/fresh-tofo-coconut.html
Sunday, June 29, 2014. My girlfriend flew down to visit me in South Africa on the condition that we’d get to spend some time traveling together outside of Cape Town. Which is my excuse for going on vacation less than three weeks into work. So, when we first spotted the guys coming over to us with the baskets of cheap bracelets, our first thought was ‘here we go again.’. 8220;Sorry, still not interested.”. 8220;It’s very cheap.”. 8220;No, thank you.”. 8220;You know how much? This went on for about five mi...

Thursday, July 10, 2014. Quick note on photos. Hey folks, having some technical issues with the photos here. The service I used to use to seperate photos within albums for each blog entry no longer works. So in the meantime, you can see some of the photos from the trip so far here. Also, there's a video for you. Check it out here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Material from this blog has been featured on several websites, including Lonely Planet. Africa and the Middle East. Quick note on photos.

JTrek: First Week of Work
http://jtrek.blogspot.com/2014/06/first-week-of-work.html
Saturday, June 14, 2014. First Week of Work. I’d been told to be ready on Wednesday at 6:30am to be picked up. This being Africa, I was picked up around 6:50. The sun wouldn’t rise for another half hour, and no matter how many layers each of us was wearing, we all felt under-dressed for the morning chill. 8220;That white stuff on the grass is pretty, eh? 8221; my boss said as we drove by, about forty minutes later. I looked where he was pointing. 8220;You mean the frost? 8221; I asked. 8221; he asked.

JTrek: December 2006
http://jtrek.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 21, 2006. I wrote a long entry thanking anyone and everyone I could think of that was involved in my trip or this show. It was long, it was eloquent and it was a final entry to make me feel proud. Then my computer crashed. As for me, well, my next step is on the way. I go back to Chicago and use what I learned. After that, I will travel around the world. Like I said, I've been saving up since I was a little kid. India was only the beginning for me. Labels: JYA- (c) NBC Universal 2006.
