Woodland Brewing Research: Starter Calculator

http://www.woodlandbrew.com/2015/02/starter-calculator.html

Applied science for better beer. Tuesday, February 3, 2015. How time effects cell growth is a factor that I have felt is missing in the existing calculators, which led me to create this starer calculator. Another personal gripe I have with the commonly used calculators is their unrealistic implied accuracy. For honesty I have included one sigma error bars on the cell calculations. I've collected data from dozens of experiments and factored it all down into this Excel calculator. April 7, 2015 at 3:00 PM.

Applied science for better beer. Monday, February 23, 2015. Yeast Starters: Stirred vs Not. If you have heard anything about stirred yeast starters you've probably heard that stir plates produce more yeast than starters that are not agitated. This seems to be a misconception that has been unfortunately widely propagated. I'm sure Jamil Zainasheff. The data behind the vastly popular Mr. Malty equation are from growth that had no aeration and no agitation. Oxygen is critical for sterol production in yeast.

Woodland Brewing Research: Refrigeration Effects on Yeast Viability

http://www.woodlandbrew.com/2012/12/refrigeration-effects-on-yeast-viability.html

Applied science for better beer. Tuesday, December 25, 2012. Refrigeration Effects on Yeast Viability. The fact is that it is documented in very reliable brewing literature that. Yeast stored in a broth can be kept for six months, and yeast stored on an agar slant can be kept for over a year. There are much more important considerations when it comes to the viability of a starter than the amount of time it has been refrigerated. Fruit. 3) has a drastic impact on viability as does alcohol. Good question&#...

Fervent Brewer: Big Beautiful Barleywine

http://blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/10/big-beautiful-barleywine.html

Thursday, October 27, 2016. I brewed my first Barleywine a couple weeks ago. I love the style, it's a great beer to sip on in the middle of winter. I didn't have the sense to take a bunch of pictures but I do have a shot of my 17.5 gallon mash tun filled for a partigyle brew from the Barleywine mash :). The Barleywine mash itself was at the very top. Since this was my first attempt at a Barleywine I purchased a great resource on the subject that never made it to me by brew day :(. Here is the recipe:.

Fervent Brewer: Canning Wort For Starters

http://blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/10/canning-wort-for-starters.html

Thursday, October 13, 2016. Canning Wort For Starters. I'm sure this is a subject blogged/vlogged about multiple times but since this was my first experience with the process I'll just write a bit about it. I had a planned brewed day last Friday, I was going to brew a Barleywine. This changed because I wanted to get some wort canned and I wanted to get another use out the WLP002 before kicking the shit out of it with a Barleywine. Mash and batch sparge as usual then start the boil. I pressure cooked at 1...

http://blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/10/yeast-banking-first-slant.html

Monday, October 17, 2016. Yeast Banking - First Slant. I don't think I wrote about making my slants but I created them when I was canning some extra wort for starters. I wrote about that in this post http:/ blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/10/canning-wort-for-starters.html. I simply used the methods taught in this blog post https:/ suigenerisbrewing.blogspot.com/2015/11/easy-home-yeast-banking-and-video.html? From Sui Generis, it's a much better resource than I could ever be on the subject. A Good Beer Blog.

Fervent Brewer: Brewing Budget

http://blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/09/brewing-budget.html

Tuesday, September 27, 2016. I plan to stretch the budget by being better at harvesting yeast for the future. I'm going to pick 5 strains that I'll attempt to keep in a healthy state. That also seems like a lot but I want to brew US, British and Belgian ales plus lagers and sours. I'd say 5 strains is a minimum. The 5th will be a mixed culture and I'll pull dregs from bottles for that. British Barleywine (An effort to utilize that WLP002 yeast cake from the brown ale and porter). A Good Beer Blog. Ales o...

Fervent Brewer: Coconut Porter Dry Coconutting And Sample Tasting

http://blog.ferventbrewer.com/2016/11/coconut-porter-dry-coconutting-and.html

Tuesday, November 15, 2016. Coconut Porter Dry Coconutting And Sample Tasting. Some people said to lace it through the entire brewing process (mash, boil, secondary), others say to roast the coconut and still others say to use sweetened coconut. With all this advice there's only one way to find out what really works and that's through trial and error. Here is what I did and some partial results. I'll be sure to post final tasting notes on this beer. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A Good Beer Blog.

Woodland Breeze Labradors in PA

English Labs vs American Labs. Labrador Retrievers are categorized into three different categories: English, American, and Field. The dogs are different in appearance, but more importantly they are different in attitude. Field labs need to be in the field, American labs are incredibly intelligent but are boisterous and stubborn, and English labs are more laid back, but can be larger (up to 100 lbs). Here are some generalizations. Field Labs are trained solely for field trails. Dogs have feelings too!

Woodland Brook

A New Concept and Practice for Being a Church. Thursday, January 1, 2015. Jesus commands us to abide in Him, for we can do nothing apart from Him (John 15.4-5). Abiding in Christ is the starting point of our fellowship. Having followed Christ for nearly 30 years, I am learning the riches of this truth afresh. Abiding in Christ is by faith. First of all, it is to believe in and trust God. Trusting God, in turn, starts by embracing His grace. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
