Answer: although both words can be used as verbs and nouns, usually affect is used as a verb and effect as a noun. The film affected everybody. The film had a powerful effect on everybody. Affect' indicates feelings or change; 'effect' indicates results or consequences. I was profoundly affected by what I saw.

Cut out the impersonal 'it' if you know the subject of the sentence. One way to get greater clarity in your writing is to identify the subject of each sentence, the person or thing doing the action. The pronoun 'it' is a little word to watch out for and, in many cases, remove in favour of a known subject. Or when used in a general statement:. And some more examples:.
