November | 2013 | Adventures in Mothland

https://adventuresinmothland.wordpress.com/2013/11

All posts for the month November, 2013. Back in a blaze of orange! On November 26, 2013. Sorry, it’s been a while. I’ve had a hectic summer and autumn and blogging has kind of fallen away for a while. However, I am at least thinking about it again, so much so that here I am typing away, for what it’s worth! Anyway, the past week has been eventful, what with the 1stW Elegant Tern and a mystery gull along the Niagara River! Apart from a broken outer primary on the RH wing the bird appeared to be in good co...

January | 2013 | Adventures in Mothland

https://adventuresinmothland.wordpress.com/2013/01

All posts for the month January, 2013. Frosted in the Rain. On January 29, 2013. A phone call from HC this morning secured me the pleasure of visiting some fine folk who are presently hosting a rather nice bird – this ghostly. Hoary Redpoll. I hadn’t seen one for quite some time so was eager to get a few photos for my files. As it turned out the bird was easy to see, but the photos were certainly not going to be anything special what with the ultra dreary “British winter” light! On January 29, 2013.

May | 2013 | Adventures in Mothland

https://adventuresinmothland.wordpress.com/2013/05

All posts for the month May, 2013. On May 31, 2013. I’ve always wondered just what you’d get if you crossed Shrek with Frankenstein… well, it’s obvious innit – Schreckensteinia! Kidding aside, the tiny moths in the family Schreckensteiniidae are a most interesting bunch and I was delighted to pluck one off the sheet the night before last. Until recently I think I would have been stumped at the strange appearance of this moth, but last year I was fortunate to see another member of the clan called. The eur...

The tale of the owl and the squirrel…. On May 24, 2013. I went to look for a Barred Owl yesterday afternoon. It had been found the day before by a friend of mine and I figured it was a bird I really shouldn’t miss! Anyway, after 30 minutes or so the owl suddenly lurched towards me and landed right above my head! I was worried I had unwittingly spooked him, but it soon became apparent he had eyes on something more interesting than myself! Wrong end of the Island! On May 23, 2013. Yesterday looked promisin...

The Spruce Blog: The Evacuation of the Great White North - La Evacuación del Norte

http://thespruceblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-evacuation-of-great-white-north-la.html

Saturday, October 19, 2013. The Evacuation of the Great White North - La Evacuación del Norte. Fall is a busy season in the Northwoods for all forms of life. The leaves turned quick and dirty this year, but it's always amazing to see the Northwoods turn "rave colors", if only for a little bit. Para todas las formas. Sólo unas pocas veces. En el lado este. The Spruce Blog: Little Red Riding Wolf

http://thespruceblog.blogspot.com/2014/03/little-red-riding-wolf.html

Wednesday, March 5, 2014. Little Red Riding Wolf. I was on the road to the sea, helping my friends Brian and Kate of Seabirding. Spot on some of their trips off the Outer Banks. I parked my car along some fields where the birds were hanging out and I climbed on top of it (couldn't do this with the Altima! To get a better view. There were several harriers tacking around in the fields, and some patience was necessary to wait out the owls. Started singing behind the car and a Woodcock. I noticed some moveme...

Saturday, October 26, 2013. Lake Trout Love - El Amor de Trucha del Lago. Algonquin has entered winter this week. The Spruce Blog: October 2012

http://thespruceblog.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 30, 2012. Party in the North and Banding the Boreal. Before I left for the tropics, I made it a goal to see some "winter" birds that Ontarians see usually only in the cold months of the year, before I left. And, of course, to party. The Northwoods' hardwood trees have almost all lost their leaves but this does not mean there is no color to be seen. The Tamarack, a deciduous conifer, blazes a beautiful golden-yellow, which has replaced the reds and oranges of the hardwoods in Algonquin.

The Spruce Blog: May 2013

http://thespruceblog.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Friday, May 3, 2013. So, if there are any of you blog readers left out there, I was off the face of the Earth for a few months, but now I am back in the Northwoods and all is well. I should have reasonable internet while I'm Algonquin and should have plenty of things to write about. It is Spring, after all, and new and exciting things are happening all the time! But first, let's have a quick scroll to catch y'all up with what went down in the past couple of months! Find a comfy chair. We saw some monkeys.

Systematic List – Ontario Moths

http://www.ontariomoths.com/list

Sorry that everything appears to be somewhat chaotic right now! It’s my aim to create pages for all of the moths that regularly occur in Ontario on this site. However, it takes time and I’m on my own so patience is definitely required! As things stand I’m adding pages and inserting photos when I can. I am trying us use photographs of moths seen in Ontario as much as possible, but am going outside of the province when the going gets tough! 01 0001 Epimartyria auricrinella – Goldcap Moss-eater Moth *.

Gypsy Moths – Ontario Moths

http://www.ontariomoths.com/hello-world

December 11th, 2011. This page is under construction. All moths have characters of their own, even the tiniest of micros – well, that may be pushing it a bit, but you know what I mean. It’s probably true to say though that some species are slightly more charismatic than others. I think male Gypsy Moths are pretty characterful, even though they are destructive pests! Filed under Field Notes. Mothing at Thickson’s Woods. Ontario Moths is happy to support National Moth Week! All content 2016 by David Beadle.

Norfolk County Naturalist: February 2013

Nature sightings from southern Ontario, and wherever my wanderings take me. Wednesday, 6 February 2013. Guadalupe - Los Quetzales Ecolodge. I just typed up a bunch of stuff and then lost it all. Damn blogger. Somehow it didn't automatically save a draft either. Guadalupe is just about Cerro Punta, beside Vulcan Baru, the tallest mountain in Central America. I liked the area so much I spent an extra day here. The Los Quetzales Ecolodge is nice because although it has some fancy cabins in the woods...Hummi...

Nature sightings from southern Ontario, and wherever my wanderings take me. Saturday, 26 January 2013. Panama Days 3 and 4 - Gamboa. Day 3: Slept in and took my time getting out of Panama City to Gamboa. Taxi for 25$, or bus for 0.65? Blue-gray Tanagers are super common but are still stunning regardless. Black-cheeked Woodpeckers are common - this one was excavating a nesthole. It was build to service a pipeline built during WW2 but never used. The road doesn't stay this nice.not by a long shot. Adventures In Mothering Boys

Adventures In Mothering Boys. Monday, September 6, 2010. So as I sit here on this long weekend, I wonder where all the time went! I had a lot planned to do this 4 day weekend, and all I did was family time. Priorities! Oh I did hand stitch a hem around a quilt square and sewed it over the torn square on Baylin's blanket. That was fun and rewarding because Baylin was so excited about his super momma fixing his favorite blanket! They have arms and feet (sometimes rocket feet! I am still not sure why it had...

The Kingston Murre…. On December 5, 2013. There I was painting a female Dickcissel for “The Birds of Brazil” when a phone call from MK got me all on edge. “Have you heard about the Thick-billed Murre in Kingston? It was as simple as that. One look at the photos posted on e-bird and I was pretty excited already. I was somewhat less excited about the prospect of getting out of bed at 3 in the morning though, as may well imagine. However, one has to suffer from time to time I guess…. Only time would tell.
