Practical Faster Testing With Rails. Talk @ Scottish Ruby Conference Fringe 1/7/2012. At the end of June I was able to attend the fantastic Scottish Ruby Conference up in Edinburgh. After the usual fun packed and informative couple of days you’d have though we would be all worn out come sunday. Not so it seems and so the SRC Fringe was born. Organised by one @ryanstenhouse. And taking place over a few gentle hours on sunday afternoon. The Fringe event made for a nice ending to a exhausting weekend.

Unit Tested Controllers in Ruby On Rails. Fast tests good, slow tests bad. Testing controllers in Rails using the default test setup is slow. In fact testing a lot of Rails is slow, wether you use RSpec or TestUnit, it makes no difference. The cause is the architecture of Rails, and the default test setups which encourage you to write integration tests, often without need. RSpec began life in 2005 as an experiment by Steven Baker, with early contributions from Dave Astels and Aslak Hellesøy. David Chelimsky joined the team that summer, and accepted leadership of the project in 2006. David also built rspec-rails, which provided tight integration with Ruby on Rails. In late 2008, Chad Humphries built Micronaut. A new spec runner, to address these problems. Micronaut also included a new metadata system that provided much greater flexibility than RSpec 1 had. Work on RSpec 3.
