A Blog for the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine. More citations, new audiences, and memes… who doesn’t want that? On the way back from teaching a bunch of HREC members. About ethics in qualitative research I stopped at the delightful Berkelouw Book Barn. For tea and cake. The sun beamed in the window, warming up my right side, while a fire blazed, warming up my left side. And I drafted a blog post. Was ready to go live. In a great post for Writing For Research. And going right there, and...

A Blog for the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine. The Walking Wounded calls for a rethink of what we most value. Starting with Karl Marx, many thinkers have pointed out that the creative potential of the capitalist economic system comes at a cost the lack of inherent ethical scruples to limit the inexorable logic of profit and growth. ABC TV’s Four Corners’ exposé of the scandal about a defective medical hip replacement device known as ASR is a case in point. The Walking Wounded. Fear and...

A Blog for the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine. Let’s stop the bullying of trainee doctors for patients’ sake. Size matters. At least, that seems to be the media’s belief when it comes to analysing social problems. The grimmer the stories, the uglier the experience, the more bodies at the bottom of the cliff, the better. And Dr Talia Steed. In breaking the silence around the destruction of careers and health that doctors cause among their own. But most significantly, the show highlights...

A Blog for the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine. On Not Getting Out of the Way : A Reflection on Steven Pinker’s Critique of Bioethics. Last week well known psychologist, linguist and author Steven Pinker published an op-ed in the Boston Globe, under the title The Moral Imperative for Bioethics. Get out of the way. Julie Learns Japanese - Ikimasho!

Julie Learns Japanese - Ikimasho! Saturday, January 26, 2013. Worlds Collide Under Purple Skies. It's amazing to me how often my Japanese world collides with my American world. Saturday, September 24, 2011. IT'S OK TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE? I came across the below card the other day and all my training finally made sense. A card that inspired me. Pretty much all my life I've resided in my "comfort zone". I like routine: I get up about the same time everyday, I eat the same breakfast and lunch, I workout in the morning and/or at midday, I go to bed at the same time each night. It's simple, it's nice, and it's comfortable. Don't get me wrong - I've pushed myself out of my comfort zone.
