An American in Taichung

An American in Taichung. Friday, August 03, 2007. A Day in Taipei. Taiwan's National Palace Museum. We arrived back in Taipei late at night, and took a bus and then some taxis to A-ma's apartment. Dragging our luggage behind us, silence settled as we fought against our exhaustion. Imagine our shock when we arrived at the apartment with the clock hands nearing 2:30am, and who comes to open the door for us but A-ma herself! From left to right: Gabe, Shela, A-ma, Kevin, me, Chris, Eric. Far too quickly, it ...

An American in Taichung: Hong Kong VII: Ladies' Market

http://kelly-in-taiwan.blogspot.com/2007/08/hong-kong-vii-ladies-market.html

An American in Taichung. Wednesday, August 01, 2007. Hong Kong VII: Ladies' Market. Outside the Mong Kok MRT Station. We arrived back in Hong Kong and hopped on the subway to Kowloon, where we had plans to visit the famous Ladies' Market. A place Gabe's girlfriend had hoped to take us earlier but for which we wound up having insufficient time. Me near one of the main cross-streets. Posted by Kelly @ 6:12 PM. More rambling thoughts, now those of a second-time traveler abroad. Washington, DC, United States.

An American in Taichung: Hong Kong VI: The Peak

http://kelly-in-taiwan.blogspot.com/2007/08/hong-kong-vi-peak.html

An American in Taichung. Wednesday, August 01, 2007. Hong Kong VI: The Peak. The highlight of the night - see the lights of Hong Kong behind me? Our destination for the first part of the evening was Victoria Peak, known locally simply as The Peak. The view from the bus as we climbed up the mountain. Still, we were there to see the scenery, not the local history - and what scenery it was! Finally, we reached the top and got off the bus. The Peak Tower. Kevin at the top. Here I am at our window table.

An American in Taichung: Hong Kong III: Fireworks

http://kelly-in-taiwan.blogspot.com/2007/08/hong-kong-iii-fireworks.html

An American in Taichung. Wednesday, August 01, 2007. Hong Kong III: Fireworks. The Hong Kong skyline at night. We were supposed to meet Eric and Matt on the Avenue of Stars. At 7:30 to watch the fireworks that Hong Kong has every Saturday night. We had specially arranged to meet on Kowloon (rather than Hong Kong Island) so that we could get a good view of the Hong Kong skyline. We had arranged to meet by Jackie Chan's handprints. And exploring the area, which was rich with Hong Kong movie history.

An American in Taichung: Hong Kong II: Ocean Park

http://kelly-in-taiwan.blogspot.com/2007/08/hong-kong-ii-ocean-park.html

An American in Taichung. Wednesday, August 01, 2007. Hong Kong II: Ocean Park. We arrived at Ocean Park. The sign that greeted us. We entered the park to the sound of carnival music and found our way to the first intersection, where the brightly colored sign you see above informed us of the various attractions to be found in this quadrant of the park. I was excited to find that we had apparently wandered into Ocean Park's Wet 'n' Wild Panda Mania. There were even panda-themed flower baskets. Force create...

An American in Bangkok: Final day in Thailand!

An American in Bangkok. Friday, August 15, 2008. Final day in Thailand! The Bioethics Museum at UNESCO Bangkok. Our last day in Thailand was bittersweet, as final days usually are. We began the morning with our last official BIOCEP presentation ever, at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific. A display about cloning, with models of Dolly. Scriptive nor wholly pre. Hailing a taxi as we left the UNESCO headquarters,. We caught sight of a bunch of masked police officers. Writing a ticket on a speeding (or illegally-parked?

An American in Bangkok: AIDS Hospice

http://kelly-in-thailand.blogspot.com/2008/08/aids-hospice.html

An American in Bangkok. Friday, August 8, 2008. One of several statues at the hospice. Our final academic stop for the week was at an AIDS Hospice located in Lopburi, Thailand, about two hours north of Bangkok, deep in the countryside. The hospice is actually a temple, called Wat Phra Nam Phu, a beautiful sanctuary-like compound home to several hundred people and families living with HIV and/or AIDS. The entrance to Wat Phra Bat Nam Phu. A row of the homes for patients and families. The temple of ashes.

An American in Bangkok. Thursday, August 7, 2008. Siriraj and Yanhee: A study in contrasts. Statue of Prince Mahidol outside Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital. Today we had the opportunity to visit two of Bangkok's largest and most important hospitals: Siriraj. A well-established and well-respected public hospital partnered with Mahidol University's Medical School, and Yanhee. A more recently established and rapidly-expanding private hospital specializing in cosmetic enhancements and medical tourism. Currently,...

An American in Bangkok. Monday, August 11, 2008. Golden Jubilee Medical Center. Me with nurse at Golden Jubilee (note the shoes! I totally wore similar ones when I was a candy-striper back in the day). At Bangkok's Golden Jubilee Medical Center, we were treated to a stimulating lecture on Eastern versus Western modalities of medicine, as well as a tour of the hospital's newly-opened integrative and alternative medicine facilities. An American in Bridgetown: Day Two: In which I give my paper!

http://kelly-in-barbados.blogspot.com/2008/02/day-two-in-which-i-give-my-paper.html

An American in Bridgetown. Philosophy and the Caribbean Sea. Friday, February 29, 2008. Day Two: In which I give my paper! Yes, today was the big day - my first paper delivered at a conference. Ever How did it go? Did I freeze up? Was I booed away from the podium? Did I trip over a power cord? Was I raked over the coals in the Q&A session afterwards? Did I fail to realize this until the night before I was scheduled to speak? The answer to those two is, unfortunately, yes. This is how I opened my talk:.

An American in Bridgetown: Bridgetown

http://kelly-in-barbados.blogspot.com/2008/03/bridgetown.html

An American in Bridgetown. Philosophy and the Caribbean Sea. Sunday, March 2, 2008. This statue was built to commemorate the installation of piped water to Barbados's capital on March 29th, 1861. It was lovely, but - the irony! It was bone dry! No water running to this fountain! This monument, on the other hand, was created for a different reason which I've now forgotten. Pretty, though, isn't it? These, if you can believe it, are Barbados's Houses of Parliament. The promenade by the water. I have to admi...

Well, as I type this now, we have only about four hours left in the air! 8211; never neglected in dehydrated darkness for hours at a time. Once 6pm EST (5am Bangkok time) rolled around, I began to I feel like I’m getting a second wind that will hopefully last until I get home around midnight tonight. An American in Bangkok. Saturday, August 16, 2008. Closing thoughts: Two lists. Woman selling fruit at Ampawa floating market. Things I will definitely miss about Thailand. All the wonderful people I met here. The smell of incense at streetside shrines. Thailand’s lavish use of purple and gold in decorating. Yummy Thai dishes, especially green curry, som tom, and mango sticky rice. The delicious (and cheap! Being greeted with cute bows and ‘ sawa-dee-ka. 8217; or ‘ sawa-dee-khrap. 8217; all the time.

Abroad in Italy...

A quick (and hopefully painless) update! Sep 25th, 2008 at 9:15 PM. Tomorrow we leave for Pompeii, Sorento, and Capri, so before an eventful weekend begins, let me take care of a fairly eventful week here in Montepulciano. But, I'm happy to announce, this week my homesickness has faded, partly due to a few things I've got to be happy about (one of which is being invited to participate in a group show at Young Blood Gallery in December :D). Anyhow, onto the week! Needless to say, this was a very busy week...
