"For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go; I travel for travel's sake. And to write about it afterwards, if only the public will be so condescending as to read. But the great affair is to move; to feel the needs and hitches of life a little more nearly; to get down off this feather bed of civilisation, and to find the globe granite underfoot and strewn with cutting flints." Of Books and Bicycles: Books, books, and more books

http://ofbooksandbikes.blogspot.com/2006/12/books-books-and-more-books.html

Of Books and Bicycles. Thursday, December 14, 2006. Books, books, and more books. I've written before about not mooching. More books, but I haven't kept that resolution. Surprise, surprise. How can I resist when they are free. To getting a copy of Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat, Pray, Love. For example, but somebody else mooched it before I could put in my request. Sigh. But, in addition to Alberto Manguel's A Reading Diary. And Edmund White's biography. Books by Jane Austen that I haven't read! A year or so ag...

http://ofbooksandbikes.blogspot.com/2006/12/orhan-pamuks-snow.html

Of Books and Bicycles. Friday, December 22, 2006. This is my last post for a while, as the Hobgoblin and I are heading out to my parents' place in western New York state tomorrow. As they have very slow dial-up, I think I'll have to do without blogs for a few days. It'll be hard, but I'm going to try my best not to let it get to me. I'll be back by the middle or end of next week. I finished Orhan Pamuk's Snow. Which I'm currently in the middle of, and also a little bit of The Places in Between. There's a...

Of Books and Bicycles: Footsteps

http://ofbooksandbikes.blogspot.com/2006/12/footsteps.html

Of Books and Bicycles. Wednesday, December 20, 2006. I'm taking a break from summing up my year (more on that to come though! To write about Richard Holmes's book Footsteps: Adventures of a Romantic Biographer. Of which I have now read about 35 pages, and 35 captivating pages they are. I've found a new quotation for my blog (see above) and have become convinced I need to read Robert Louis Stevenson's Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes. Posted by Rebecca H. Of Books and Bicycles: My year in books

http://ofbooksandbikes.blogspot.com/2006/12/my-year-in-books.html

Of Books and Bicycles. Monday, December 18, 2006. My year in books. Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. Trilogy. I loved these books and flew through them. I haven't read young adults books in forever, and these books made me think that's a shame. I'm certain I'll re-read them at some point when I need something fun. I found the plot absorbing, but the ideas were too. Mary Oliver's American Primitive. Elaine Scarry's On Beauty and Being Just. Rebecca West's The Fountain Overflows. Many thanks to Stefanie.

Musings of a Quasi-Intellectual: October 2006

http://moaqi.blogspot.com/2006_10_01_archive.html

Musings of a Quasi-Intellectual. Sunday, October 08, 2006. This is one of the better young adult queer fictions I have read. Good grasp of the intricacies of young friendships and the confusion surrounding that first love. The synopsis is the three main characters have been inseperable for many years. One the points of the triangle goes away to a summer leadership camp and everything changes. The tales unfolds over the next year. I highly reccommend this. Fairies in shopping malls? 8221;it must give pleasure ” — Wallace Stevens. Skip to primary content. Submitting, Part 2. Saying Farewell To Illness. September 20, 2006. Yesterday morning, on my way into my office in San Francisco, I realized I was no longer in the fog I’d seemed to have fallen into when I learned I had breast cancer. This fog mostly seemed to involve eating a lot of mint chocolate chip ice cream, lying around reading, and thinking about mortality more than I usually do. I kept wanting to say,. Oh, bloglily, this po...

Involuntary Memory: July 2006

http://involuntarymemory.blogspot.com/2006_07_01_archive.html

A group blog dedicated to the reading and discussion of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. Monday, July 31, 2006. All the Way to Combray. Having made it through Combray, several questions formed in reflection are eager to appear here, in the hope of finding answers to accompany them. We probably don't yet know the answers, but might hold these questions in mind as we continue our journey, witnessing Swann in Love. Involuntary memory is meant to signify recollections which come unbidden to mind. ...

A group blog dedicated to the reading and discussion of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. Monday, August 20, 2007. On finishing In Search of Lost Time. I want to write just a few words about finishing Proust’s. In Search of Lost Time. This is a question that has lingered from the very first volume when it becomes clear that Marcel has an interest in, and perhaps a talent for, writing. The answer the book provides is satisfying, and realistic, given everything that has happened up until that poi...

Involuntary Memory: January 2009

A group blog dedicated to the reading and discussion of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. Friday, January 02, 2009. The End of the Guermantes Way. It has taken me over two years to finish the first volume of Moncrieff's translation. Of course I have read any number of books in between; not every minute was spent on Proust. But who reads a book for over two years? Is anyone else still reading this monumental work? Posted by Quillhill at 4:58 AM. Links to this post. The End of the Guermantes Way.

Involuntary Memory: June 2006

http://involuntarymemory.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html

A group blog dedicated to the reading and discussion of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. Friday, June 30, 2006. My normal reading habit is to settle into bed with my book at the end of the day. The normal result is that I read maybe two pages and then fall asleep. If I'm determined to read a long work, such as a 1,000-plus page novel, I have to devote other, more wakeful, times of the day to the effort. His masterpiece with his narrator going to sleep. In minute detail. Links to this post. Assisti...

A group blog dedicated to the reading and discussion of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. Tuesday, October 10, 2006. Cross-posted at So Many Books. I am moving along through In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower. I am not moving along as fast as I would like, but even slow is good considering after finishing Swann's Way. The young narrator (early teens? We never really know his age) loves the author Bergotte and has read everything of the author's that he's written. In Swann's Way. The Intermittan...

Involuntary Memory: I am a laggard!

http://involuntarymemory.blogspot.com/2006/12/i-am-laggard.html

A group blog dedicated to the reading and discussion of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. Friday, December 01, 2006. I am a laggard! I am late, I know, running far behind the pack in the high cone of dust kicked up by all y'all's sandalled feet, but here I come, charging across the plains as I begin to flicker through the pages of Swann's Way in earnest. I just finished the Combray section, and was stunned, staggered, stupefied and electrified all at once by the following passage near the end:.

I am currently in the middle of a fairly lengthy holiday journey across the country to visit with family, so my usual round-up of my year in reading is late and will be quick. I make my resolutions and goals, I put on multiple sweaters, I make soup. I put laminated snowflakes up on all the windows, just to give us all (me) something pretty and interesting to look at. Somehow I get through it every year, but not very gracefully. More like stoically. It was one of my Christmas presents, and I was so happy to see it!
