Saturday, May 30, 2015. After a camp meal, grandsons Daweson, Issiah, and your merry blogster went for an after-dinner walk around pristine Baker Beach Dunes. On the dunes, we ran into a hiking couple doing the same thing from the nearby car campground. During the exchange of pleasantries, my two young charges puffed out their chests and with a great deal of pride Daweson blurted out "We're hiking! No," corrected his younger sibling "we're backpacking! On their first Richard Backpack. A darn fine sunset.

Last year, I had planned to hike the trail solo during Memorial Day weekend but the weather was so lousy the trip was scratched. So this year, another attempt was penciled in. Sunday, March 29, 2015. The night before, Dollie and I had gone to Eugene for a Kitty, Daisy, and Lewis. Concert. By the way, here's my plug: Great band! Since we rolled into into Winston around 2 AM with ears still buzzing from the show, it made for a late start for the next day's hike. Gotta get my beauty rest, you know. Because of the much needed sleep-in, it stood to reason it'd have to be a short drive to do a short hike and Pine Bench. Spring fed water for your health. What a bushwhack looks like.

What is a Richard Hike? Several years ago I volunteered to lead back-to-back hikes for the Friends of the Umpqua Hiking Club. First to Mule Mountain then two weeks later to Sandstone Trails. Both trails consisted of steep climbs of about four miles and as it turned out, the ticks were very happy to see us. It was then, I think, that the phrase Richard Hike was first bandied about. This website is my version of spreading the word and I hope to see you on the trail! Check out my blog.
