Man kaufe Aktivkohlegranulat in der Apotheke oder dem nächsten Zoofachgeschägt (Filtermedium für Aquarien), fülle dies in den gereamten und ausgeschliffenen Kopf der Pfeife und stecke das Teil OHNE Mundstück, für eine Stunde oder auch länger bei 110 C in den Backofen. Danach lässt man den Kopf OHNE Mundstück abkühlen, schüttet die Kohle raus und fertig ist das Ganze. Muff und Tabakrestgerüche sind defakto spurlos verschwunden.
