Katharine and M.E.

Thursday, 13 August 2015. Things have been quiet around here for quite a while. Thankfully, this isn't due to a deterioration in my health; I've just been working on other projects (such as writing an article for ME Awareness Week for my university's student newspaper. And writing a chapter for an anthology on the unique lived experience of childhood ME). This post has been languishing in my 'drafts' folder for over a year. I feel now is the perfect time to rediscover it. Thing in the world. In the words...

Katharine and M.E.: July 2014

http://www.katharineandme.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 23 July 2014. Today I'm joining in with the lovely Tammy-Louise Wilkins. For her I'm Not Perfect. This is a topic I feel strongly about: last year I witnessed some quite traumatic consequences of perfectionism (which culminated in sirens and police cars), and as a chronic illness patient I know how important it is to avoid undue pressure and stress. Perfection is - perhaps by definition - impossible and unattainable - and as Regina Spektor sings. Or 10 more seconds of the plank. When I became ...

Katharine and M.E.: October 2014

Wednesday, 15 October 2014. University and M.E. While this is obviously written from my own experiences of living and studying with ("complex") M.E., it may also apply to a certain extent to those living with other health conditions - please leave any further advice/comments below! Choosing a university and course. To do" with "what you can. Do"), and have wrestled with innumerable UCAS forms, visiting universities. Katharine and M.E.: April 2014

http://www.katharineandme.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Monday, 28 April 2014. Back up north for summer (and exams.). The past five weeks have flown by and I was back on a train heading north before I knew it. I’ve had a great - albeit restful - time at home, and although my holidays revolved mainly around writing essays, I did manage to see some friends, which was lovely. Booking train tickets early meant that I got to travel first class for the 5 hour journey to Durham. I unashamedly took advantage of the free biscuits. My best friend helped me carry my boo...

Katharine and M.E.: I'm worth more than £50

http://www.katharineandme.blogspot.com/2015/03/im-worth-more-than-50.html

Thursday, 19 March 2015. I'm worth more than £50. This morning there was a discussion on The Wright Stuff, on Channel 5, entitled "Is the NHS failing M.E. sufferers? It featured the CEO of Action for M.E., Sonya Chowdhury, and Graeme Bloom, who has M.E. While I expected to be left feeling very angry and upset (as I usually am whenever M.E. is mis. Aside from a rather unfortunate remark from Nadine Dorries that "97% of young people with ME/cfs recover" ( if only this were true! How is this right? Firstly,...

Katharine and M.E.: May 2014

http://www.katharineandme.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, 31 May 2014. A look back on M.E. Awareness Month. It's the last day of May (aka M.E. Awareness Month) and, as I've been rather wrapped up in exams and the inevitable-yet-oh-so-horrible payback from said exams, I thought I'd take the opportunity to reflect on all our awareness-raising efforts. Firstly, though, I want to say a huge THANK YOU. To everyone who read my post (if you've not read it, it can be found here. As well as a 'real-life' tea party, everyone got involved online to drink tea and...

Jess' ME/CFS blog: January 2014

http://jesscfs.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Friday, 31 January 2014. Gastroscopy medical and Uni updates. Well I've survived my first (and hopefully last! Anybody squeamish might want to skip the next paragraph. In terms of a general medical update I've had a couple of appointments since I last updated you all and have a few more lined up. I finally saw a GI person- at last! Over the last few days I have been saying my goodbyes before leaving my university city and moving home for a while (although I will be travelling back for all my medical appo...

Jess' ME/CFS blog: February 2014

http://jesscfs.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Monday, 17 February 2014. Frustration of normal results and update. Frustration of "normal" results. I've had lots of tests come back normal over the years- some I've desperately wanted to come back normal, some I've expected to come back normal, some have been unexpectedly normal and on occasions hearing 'normal' has been frustrating and disappointing. It's very difficult to be so broken whilst also currently unfixable. 'Normal' is not always nice. Well, where do I start. I'm still waiting to hear about...

Jess' ME/CFS blog: 55 things learnt from 5.5 years ill

http://jesscfs.blogspot.com/2015/03/55-things-learnt-from-55-years-ill.html

Sunday, 1 March 2015. 55 things learnt from 5.5 years ill. What I've been through is pretty much documented on here. I've already mentioned the severe pain, the immobility, the loss of independence, the nausea that nearly resulted in tube feeding, the struggle to walk, the struggle to sit up, etc etc. The worth of a person should not be based on what they can or can't do, but who they are as a person. Every individual is important and their life, and quality of life, matters. Good times pass too, but it'...

AlienOutbody: Trip to Cromer

http://alianoutbody.blogspot.com/2015/07/trip-to-cromer.html

Friday, 17 July 2015. A few weeks ago I went along on an Elevate trip to Cromer Pier and the Henry Bloggs Musuem. It was a lovely day to be at the seaside- very nice especially as the day before and the day after it rained. Cromer is a seaside town on the North Norfolk coast, famous for having the last pier show in the UKand it's crabs, Cromer Crabs are supposed to be some of the best in the country! It's also the 2015 Pier of the Year. And for information about the Henry Blogg Museum, click here. As man...

AlienOutbody: Obsessions...

http://alianoutbody.blogspot.com/2015/07/obsessions.html

Friday, 24 July 2015. Some of my current obsessions. This is probably one of my favourite chocolate bars; especially Happy Cow and it's recently been on offer at Morrisons half price a bar. I only let myself have it when it is on offer or I'd be the size of a house! I'm currently on my last bar *sobsob* and when thats finished I shall have to wait until it goes back on offer! I get my drops yarns from Wool Warehouse and they often have sales on drops yarns throughout the year, so the already reasonably p...

Jess' ME/CFS blog: Return to Uni following medical leave

http://jesscfs.blogspot.com/2014/10/return-to-uni-following-medical-leave.html

Saturday, 4 October 2014. Return to Uni following medical leave. Returning to University following medical leave has been a roller-coaster of emotions. Being chronically ill is beyond hard. You are exhausted and it's exhausting- there is so much hassle trying to sort everything and juggle things. And then the more you think about it all, the more exhausted you get, and the more difficult it becomes. Ugh. Thankfully, my group have been lovely, and I'm lucky in that I have support workers, which means I al...

Jess' ME/CFS blog: Trigeminal Neuralgia/facial pain Awareness

http://jesscfs.blogspot.com/2014/10/trigeminal-neuralgiafacial-pain.html

Tuesday, 7 October 2014. Trigeminal Neuralgia/facial pain Awareness. Today, October 7th, is the awareness day for trigeminal neuralgia and other facial pain conditions. I have had facial pain for several years now and I don't think I can begin to explain how severe the pain can get at times. I get very sharp, electric-shock-like pains, particularly in my temples and along my jaw, in addition to vice-like aches in my forehead and cheeks. My dose of gabapentin was adjusted up and down a few times. High...

Jess' ME/CFS blog: December 2014

http://jesscfs.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Friday, 19 December 2014. I've been meaning to update for a while, but just haven't got round to it, so sorry about that! Things are going fairly well really. I'm actually on the train to home-home from uni-home at the moment. Excited to have made it through my first ever uni term major-relapse-free! I've barely missed anything (*proud face*), but admittedly I have been part-time this term. I'm even more excited by the prospect of time-off though. It's certainly needed! I've also started melatonin since ...

Wednesday, December 21, 2011. FDR and MLK Memorial. We are in DC. We made it. I flew with all four kids by My SELF! I tried to get a shot of them all standing "in line" but alas this is the best we could get. Little Claire loves to "walk" all by herself but don't be fooled by those big dough eyes. She is a little firecracker and when she gets freedom she takes any change to run. My little four year old buddy. How are you growing up so fast. STOP GROWING PLEASE! I just love everything about this photo!

A Short Story Collection: From the Heart. February 10, 2017. February 10, 2017. Tags: From the Heart. Somehow I always seemed to have my back to the sun anyway. When I re-read Glasses, I found myself wondering: What if we could see each person we encounter, not as flesh and blood, but as the people they truly are? What if our connections and experiences make a lasting mark on us and someone else could see that mark? A little bit of grief, a little solitude, and a dash of could-have-been. January 4, 2017.

My great WordPress blog | Just another WordPress site

My great Wordpress blog. The Journey of In-Between. October 10, 2014. You’re fully dilated. It’s time to push now. There are no more challenging words ever spoken encouragement and devastation all in one phrase. The tremendous hope of what is to come, the awful realization that the coming work is perhaps the greatest challenge yet. Like a woman in labor, just when you think you’re done with the worst of it you have to start pushing. Today is the day for pushing. I dance, play and sing despite living much...
